Understanding how your piece responds to wear and to its surroundings lets you take part in its preservation. Cared for well, it will hold its beauty — and the memories it represents — for generations.
A living material
When metal is subjected to controlled heating and cooling, its structure undergoes a profound change called annealing. The particles within the metal respond to the altering temperatures, expanding and compressing in a delicate dance. This rhythmic movement renders the metal softer and more malleable — it's what allows our artisans to shape it into the piece you wear.
The same quality that makes the metal feel alive means stones can shift ever so slightly over time. This is not a flaw; it is the nature of handcrafted jewelry. Regular care and an annual check keep the metal strong and every stone securely nestled in its setting.
Daily care
Avoid chemicals
Remove your jewelry before activities that involve harsh chemicals — chlorinated pools, cleaning products, perfumes applied directly. Chemicals can dull the metal and weaken gemstones over time.
Mindful handling
Handle your piece with care and take it off before sports or anything with direct impact — a hard knock can scratch metal, chip a stone, or loosen a setting. Treat each piece as the delicate, crafted object it is.
Temperature changes
Avoid sudden temperature changes and extreme heat, which cause the structure to expand and compress. Opals and emeralds ask for special attention here — they are sensitive stones, and abrupt shifts can crack or damage them.
Cleaning
At home
Gemstones attract natural skin oils and dust, which dim their shine over time. Gently clean your piece with mild soap and lukewarm water, using a soft brush for hard-to-reach corners. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.
Annual inspections
Once a year, let us look at your piece. Our team inspects for loose stones, worn prongs, and signs of wear — without cost. Write to us and we'll send a shipping label; we only ask that you cover insured shipping so your piece travels safely to us.
Professional cleaning
A professional cleaning by our jewelers at least once a year keeps your piece in optimal condition, and lets us address any adjustment before it becomes a repair.
Storage
When stored together, jewelry's worst enemy is other jewelry. Keep each piece in its own pouch or in a compartmented jewelry box to prevent scratches and tangles, in a clean, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
